Southeast Asia Graduate Student Workshop Facilitator

Each Spring semester 2023-2027, a graduate student working group will convene weekly to consider various themes in Southeast Asian studies. Funded by Bringing Southeast Asia Home, an initiative sponsored by the Henry Luce Foundation Initiative on Southeast Asia, one graduate student will receive $1,000 to organize the activities of the group each Spring semester, with the help of the Assistant Director of Southeast Asian Initiatives. The graduate student workshop facilitator (GSWF) will survey participating graduate students about topics of interest and reading suggestions, and will create a schedule for the group. The GSWF will also arrange for local Southeast Asia focused faculty to give lectures to the group on their own research or on practical topics of doing research in Southeast Asia. The GSWF is not responsible for teaching any material. Applications are due annually in mid-November. 

The next deadline to apply for these funds is November 22, 2024. Applications can be submitted to the CAC’s Assistant Director for Southeast Asia Initiatives, Becky Butler.

  • A one-page summary of your own research
  • A one-page CV
  • A one-page cover letter explaining interest in convening this group

 

Candidates for funding should be UNC students focused on one or more of the eleven countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam) or a Southeast Asian diaspora community.
