Funded by Bringing Southeast Asia Home, an initiative sponsored by the Henry Luce Foundation Initiative on Southeast Asia, these awards are meant to provide one semester of funding for students near the end of their graduate career. To receive the funds, students must have completed all their coursework requirements and qualifying exams and must have already completed writing a substantial part of their dissertation. These funds are awarded in the Spring semester for students intending to graduate either in the same Spring semester or the following Fall. They are not intended to cover the cost of research. Because awards are made at the amount equivalent to an RAship/TAship ($10,000), the recipient’s home department may also cover the cost of tuition, health insurance, and fees; however, this is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of the home department. Applications are due annually in the Fall semester to receive funds for the following Spring.

The deadline to apply for these funds has been extended to November 1, 2024. Applications can be submitted to the CAC’s Assistant Director for Southeast Asia Initiatives, Becky Butler.

To apply for a Dissertation Completion Award, please submit:

  • A one-page abstract of your dissertation
  • A two-page outline of your dissertation. Clearly indicate your progress to date for each section. A bibliography/reference list is not required.
  • A one-page CV
  • A statement of financial need, including other funds applied for and received
  • A letter of support from your advisor, indicating that you have made substantial enough progress to receive this award

Awardees are welcome but not required to present the work undertaken at the next annual Southeast Asia workshop, which is held in mid-May each year.

Candidates for funding should be UNC students focused on one or more of the eleven countries of Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam) or a Southeast Asian diaspora community.
