An Absent Mother Between Two States: Third World Internationalism, Neoliberalism, and the Politics of Motherhood in Indonesia and China

Come join us for a talk and lunch with Taomo Zhou, Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at the National University of Singapore, as she examines the politics of maternal absence in Indonesia and China. This talk focuses on an Indonesian left-wing activist, Francesca Fanggidaej, in the Afro-Asian movements and a mother of seven, (1925–2013), who endured decades of forced separation from her family.

Motherhood—one of the most important, enduring, hotly debated and yet mundane social institution—is central to our understanding about the latter half of the twentieth century. This talk focuses on an Indonesian left-wing activist in the Afro-Asian movements and a mother of seven, Francisca Fanggidaej (1925–2013), who endured decades of forced separation from her family.

Taomo Zhou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chinese Studies and Dean’s Chair in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore.
