The Carolina Seminar on Transnational and Global History are pleased to welcome Dr. Adil Hasan Khan of the University of Melbourne to campus for a lecture on Europe and South Asia.

Dr. Khan’s paper examines the transformation of diplomatic officials representing the Company State in late 18th century South Asia into counterinsurgency maintaining Crown agents in the 19th century, to offer some reflections on the contemporary crises of diplomatic practice.

A profile picture of Adil Hasan KhanAdil Hasan Khan completed his PhD. in International Studies, with a specialization on International Law and a minor in Anthropology and Sociology of Development, at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva (2010-2016). He was a Senior Research Fellow with the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness (2021-2022) and a McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellow (2017-2020) at Melbourne Law School; a Residential Institute Fellow at the Institute for Global Law and Policy (IGLP), Harvard Law School (2016-2017); a Junior Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM), Vienna (2015-2016); and a Visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton University (2023).

This talk is co-sponsored by the Transnational and Global History Seminar of the Carolina Seminars; the Center for European Studies; and the Department of History at UNC-Chapel Hill. The conveners of the seminar are Cemil Aydin, Susan Pennybacker, Yusuf Sezgin, and Morgan Wilson.
