For Other Campuses
The Carolina Asia Center offers some opportunities for faculty at other institutions of higher education in North Carolina, as part of our goal of bringing a better understanding about Asia to the entire state. These opportunities are intended for faculty members teaching at community colleges, colleges, and universities.
As part of the Carolina Asia Center’s role as a National Resource Center for the study of Asia as designated by the US Department of Education, we are very eager to support the study of Asia at institutions that have traditionally been underserved in this area, including community colleges and minority-serving institutions such as Historically-Black Colleges and Universities. If faculty from those campuses have proposals for small grants to support the study of Asia on their campuses that do not fit into the opportunities below, they can reach out to the Associate Director of the Carolina Asia Center via email.
Asia Scholar Network
The Asia Scholar Network exists to create a community of scholars working on Asia-related topics across the state of North Carolina. Colleagues from across the state are welcomed to conference in Chapel Hill every Spring semester to network and present their research on Asia.
Community-Faculty Southeast Asia Partnership Awards
These funds are meant to sponsor activities that benefit both theoretical inquiry and community needs. Applications must be submitted by a community-faculty team that features at least one community member and one faculty member of any rank at any UNC system institution. Each award is in the amount of $5,000.
Course Development Grants for Faculty at Minority-Serving Institutions
The Carolina Asia Center is committed to supporting the teaching of Asia to all students across North Carolina, including at minority-serving institutions that do not have available resources to develop Asian studies teaching and/or research. As a concrete way to strengthen Asian studies and generate debate about Asia in diverse university classrooms across the state, the CAC is making available course development grants of up to $1000 to faculty at minority-serving institutions to add new courses on Asia, to add Asia content to existing courses, or to further develop Asia-related programs for their campuses.
Research Expansion to Southeast Asia Awards
These funds are intended to allow faculty whose research is located in a geographical domain outside of Southeast Asia to expand their work into the region or with populations associated with the region. These funds are appropriate for, for example, a historian of Europe who wants to investigate linkages with Southeast Asia at a particular period in history or a public health researcher who has worked with Latinx communities in NC and wants to extend an intervention to Southeast Asian American populations. This award is open to faculty members of any rank at any UNC system institution. Each award is in the amount of $4,000.
Scholar of Global Distinction Curriculum Development Grants for Community Colleges
These awards, administered through our partners at UNC World View, allow community college instructors at campuses that participate in the Scholar of Global Distinction program to add Asia content to their courses. Instructors who are selected will receive a consultation with the Carolina Asia Center about resources relevant to their proposed enhancements, and a $750 grant upon completion of the updated syllabus.
